A 90-minute heat meeting for your community or workplace

Start from what people know, follow one worker’s week, find what you can do yourselves, and agree what to ask of partners, written as invitations to work together.

Running order

MinutesWhat happensWhy
0–10Share what the hot weeks were like here last yearStart from what people know. Talk about places and conditions, not about who is to blame.
10–30Follow one worker’s week in the heat, together on one screenA shared story makes it easier to talk about our own. The worker is made up, so no one has to share theirs.
30–50Find actions for the places we live and workWorkplaces, homes, markets and streets: pick what we can start ourselves this season.
50–75See who needs to say yes, and what each would needSome protection needs partners: an employer, a landlord, a market committee, a clinic or the local council.
75–90Agree what we will do, and what we will ask of whomA name next to each action, and each request written as an invitation to work together.

Write each request as an invitation to work together: what would help, why it matters to people here, and what the group can offer in return.

Tips for the person leading

  • Use the languages people speak, and read the screen aloud.
  • Keep the worker made up. Never share someone’s own story without their permission.
  • Talk about conditions and solutions, not blame.
  • Note what the group can do on its own, and what needs a partner.
  • If anyone feels unwell from the heat, stop and look after them first.
  • Close by reading the list back, then print or photograph it.

Before the meeting

  • Choose a cool, shaded place, with drinking water for everyone.
  • Pick a time that does not cost people a day’s work.
  • Open the worker exercise, practical actions and the coordinator’s simulation in three tabs. No screen? Print the action cards.
  • Ask who will write down what is agreed.
