News and evidence

State of the field

Each month: where money for protection moved, one opportunity the evidence supports, one question worth answering, and what changed here. Written from the knowledge base, under the same rules as everything else: careful, sourced, and clear about what is known, inferred or uncertain.

October 2026

The field gathers, and the connecting work finds support

Where philanthropic money moved

Toward the work that connects

Two announcements this year support the parts of protection that sit between institutions: a South Asia climate–health desk and research consortium (The Rockefeller Foundation and Wellcome), and the next stage of the Southeast Asia Heat Health Hub, with work in Indonesia and Thailand (Philanthropy Asia Alliance). Both are field-building and evidence roles, the ones our trace of funding found thinnest. Amounts were not disclosed.

An opportunity the evidence supports

Heat-safe work

Six solutions for safer work in the heat have been measured in a study, yet our trace found no funding announcements for them. Much of this work is paid from public budgets and employers, which the trace does not cover, so this is a question worth asking rather than a gap we can confirm.

A question that grew in importance

What keeps a pilot going after its first grant?

A funder’s own account of Southeast Asia notes that successful heat-health pilots often lose their footing once funding ends. We have added it to the learning agenda, sized for a two-year study of a handful of pilots.

What changed on Common Shade

The first month through every check

Nine new records passed all seven checks, including Bangladesh’s first urban heatwave action plan, for Narayanganj, and the first Global Heat Forum in Bangkok. Two were held back: a report of a four-country coalition that established sources describe instead as four country assessments. New this month: the Atlas, the Evidence map, Follow the money, Who holds it up, Build protection, a public corrections log and, from new research on risk finance, Paying when heat strikes, where insurance, pools, credit and forecast funds for heat are each asked whether they paid, and when. Two simulations now sit beside A week in the heat, so care, health and city systems get the same attention as work: A night in the heat and A city under strain, with 25 new short films on older people, pregnancy, babies, clinics, power, water, trees and more.

Written from the knowledge base, under the same checks as every page: sourced, labelled known, inferred or uncertain, and open to correction.
